Sloped yards are one of the trickiest problems in landscaping. The ground fights you. It erodes, it's hard to walk on, and it's basically unusable space. That's exactly what we were working with here - a hillside that needed some real structure before anything else could happen.

We built two boulder retaining walls to hold the slope and define the space. Natural field boulders stacked the way they should be - tight, solid, and built to last. Between the two walls, we laid a natural stone walkway so there's a clear, easy path to move through the garden without stumbling over uneven ground. It makes the whole space feel intentional rather than thrown together.

On the upper terrace, we planted spruce trees that give the area a nice visual backdrop and will fill in beautifully over the years. The gravel surface throughout keeps maintenance low and drainage solid. Along the perimeter, we finished everything with custom decorative curbing - it gives the edges a clean, defined look that ties the whole design together.

What we ended up with is a space people can actually sit in and enjoy. The seating area tucked in front of the boulder wall is a good example of what good landscaping does - it creates a reason to be outside. A spot that used to just be a problem area is now a place worth spending time in.

If you've got a slope that's been sitting there unused, it doesn't have to stay that way. With the right combination of retaining walls, plantings, and thoughtful layout, that hillside can become one of the more interesting parts of your property.
