When a retaining wall starts leaning or breaking apart, it's not just an eyesore - it's a structural problem. Water pressure builds behind the wall, the soil shifts, and eventually the whole thing gives out. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. The old walls had run their course, and a patch job wasn't going to cut it.

We tore everything out and started fresh. Before a single block went back in, we focused on what most contractors skip - the drainage. You can see the perforated pipe, gravel bed, and filter fabric laid out behind the wall during construction. That's what keeps water from building up pressure and pushing the wall out again over time. Do it right the first time, and you don't have to do it twice.

For the rebuild, we used Versa-Lok in the Rose Creek Blend with a County Graphite cap. The warm reddish-brown tones of the block paired with the darker graphite cap give the wall a sharp, finished look that complements the home without trying too hard. The built-in step detail on the corner is a nice functional touch - clean access from the yard to the patio without needing a separate structure.

We also teamed up with Eagle Exteriors on this one to get the patio freshened up while we had the space open. The result is a backyard that works - solid walls, good drainage, a clean patio, and a layout that actually makes sense. That kind of coordination between trades is what takes a project from decent to dialed in.

If your wall is starting to lean, crack, or pull away from the soil, don't wait until it's a bigger mess. A failing retaining wall only gets worse with time - and with every heavy rain. Getting it rebuilt correctly with proper drainage is the fix that actually holds.
