Old timber walls have a lifespan. When they start leaning, rotting, and pulling away from the soil, they're not just an eyesore - they're actively failing at their one job. That's exactly what we were dealing with here. The original railroad tie wall had reached the end of the road, and the whole area needed a fresh start.
We pulled out the old timbers and replaced the wall with Versa-Lok Lakeshore Blend block and cap. It's a solid, interlocking system that holds its shape over time and looks great doing it. The texture and color of the Lakeshore Blend blend naturally into the landscape without looking too heavy or industrial. That cap detail on top gives it a finished, polished look that really makes a difference up close.
The side of the house with the steps got the same treatment. Clean coursing, well-fitted steps, and everything tied together so it functions as one cohesive wall instead of a patchwork fix. That kind of continuity matters - it's what separates a wall that just holds dirt from one that actually adds to the property.
We also prepped and planted a new apple tree in the front yard area and laid fresh sod to get the lawn back to a clean, green state. It ties the whole property together and gives everything a finished feel rather than leaving patchy bare ground behind after the wall work.
When a timber wall starts to go, the longer you wait the more the surrounding soil shifts and the more work it becomes to correct. Getting ahead of it with a quality block system means you're not dealing with this again for a very long time. That's the whole point - fix it right, and move on.
